Transforming Tradition into Progress: The Growth Story of the Baguio-Benguet Community Credit Cooperative
The Baguio-Benguet Community Credit Cooperative (BBCCC) exemplifies the power of perseverance, innovation, and community-driven growth. Founded in 1957 as the Baguio Teachers Cooperative Credit Union, Inc. by just 15 teachers with a modest share capital of ₱250.00, it has now evolved into a thriving cooperative serving thousands of members across various sectors.
Under the leadership of Atty. Alexander H. Brilliantes Sr., BBCCC transformed from a small financial aid group into a dynamic cooperative offering accessible loans, savings programs, emergency assistance, and educational support.
Despite its growth, BBCCC remains committed to its mission of promoting thrift, financial discipline, and mutual aid among its members. Like many micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), BBCCC has faced challenges, including limited technological infrastructure, loan delinquency, gaps in financial literacy, regulatory compliance issues, and employee turnover.
“We were introduced to the RTWPB-CAR productivity training programs through a partnership invitation from DOLE-CAR and RTWPB-CAR, as part of their advocacy to promote productivity and enterprise development among MSMEs in the Cordillera region,” Ms. Jane P. Suyatan, manager of BBCCC, shared.
Suyatan noted that BBCCC’s initial exposure included orientation sessions and capacity-building seminars where they learned about programs such as the ISTIV Productivity Program and Lean Management Techniques.
“Through our participation and coaching from RTWPB, we were able to assess our practices more critically and measure our productivity levels. Because of this mentoring, we established another satellite office, which led to improvements in our loan processing turnaround time, documentation systems, and member engagement activities,” she said.
“It has been nothing short of transformative. The training empowered our managers, staff, and officers to rethink outdated processes and embrace a productivity mindset. More importantly, the guidance we received helped to align our cooperative’s social mission with operational efficiency. As a result, we are now able to serve our members more quickly and effectively while also improving employee morale and engagement,” she added.
Currently, BBCCC benefits from various DOLE programs and services through its regional arm, DOLE-CAR and RTWPB-CAR.
“We are grateful to DOLE and RTWPB-CAR for their continuous guidance and support. Their programs have been instrumental in our growth, not only as a cooperative but also as a socially responsible and people-centered MSME,” said.
Despite its expansion, BBCCC remains member-owned, service-driven, and deeply rooted in the community.
“We continue to evolve by introducing innovations such as digital payment platforms and youth-focused programs, all while preserving our cooperative values and social mission,” Suyatan said.
BBCCC’s journey reflects the spirit of “Pag Produktibo, Aasenso!”—where continuous learning, adaptability, and a commitment to service lead to lasting success.
As BBCCC continues to innovate and uplift its members, it stands as a shining example of how cooperatives can drive inclusive growth and prosperity in the Cordillera region and beyond. (Contributed by RTWPB-CAR)
